Why the Heel Lock Matters for Every Athlete
Sep 26, 2025
If you’ve been around me long enough, you know I’m passionate about protecting ankles. They’re one of the most common weak points in sport, and I’ve seen too many athletes lose time because of sprains that could’ve been prevented. That’s why the heel lock taping technique is one of my favorites.
The heel lock essentially creates a secure cradle around the ankle. I tell athletes to imagine guardrails on a highway — you can still move forward freely, but you’re protected from rolling off track. It stabilizes side-to-side motion while keeping the joint flexible where it needs to be.
When I tape a heel lock, I always follow a consistent process:
-
I start with anchors around the lower leg and foot.
-
I weave tape in a figure-eight pattern around the heel, locking it into place.
-
I repeat the pattern on both sides so the ankle feels balanced and supported.
The difference is immediate. Athletes tell me they feel more confident stepping, cutting, and landing after a proper heel lock. That confidence is just as important as the physical support — it frees them up to focus on performance instead of worrying about reinjury.
Whether you’re prone to sprains or just want extra protection, the heel lock is one of the best tools I can teach. It’s a perfect example of how preparation builds resilience.
